Reduce search time by half with bilingual concordance engines: LogiTerm and WeBiSearch

Jean-François Richard

Having a background in automated productivity and in electronics, I initially started my career in 1985 as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) technician before devoting myself to the field of computer aided translation tools (CAT) in 1994. Since then, and through different experiences of work, I acquired expertise in translation memory systems, terminology extraction tools, terminology management, machine translation, full text, bitexts and project management systems.

In 1994, I founded BridgeTerm (now a Translation Management System) which acted as CAT broker. During my career and over the years, I developed and improved SynchroTerm, a bilingual terminology extraction tool allowing to feed terminology databases from translated documents.

In September 2006, Terminotix acquired SynchroTerm and I joined the team where I occupied the Sales Director position.

In April 2010, I acquired the company through a management buyout process and since then, I am the president of Terminotix. During the last two years, I have conducted research on generating automatically high quality alignments in any language pair in order to feed Neural Machine Translation engines, bilingual concordancers.

Early in 2020 and during the pandemic, I developed a bilingual website search engine called WeBiSearch available for free and for linguistic services. In Spring 2021, I released the Terminotix plugin for Windows allowing to translate from inside any application.

Customizable and fast one-click terminology search in the EU corpus and IATE: an overview of Juremy's functionalities

One Hour Workshop: Customizable and fast one-click terminology search in the EU corpus and IATE: an overview of Juremy’s functionalities

Linguists who work with EU-related texts and legal documents are familiar with the high quality standards and consistency requirements which these translated documents need to fulfil. To meet these standards and maintain a high level of professionalism, linguists spend a significant amount of time on terminology research and referencing.

After having gained first-hand experience with this research workflow, the founders of Juremy created a tool based on the need for a faster and more user-friendly terminology search method to facilitate the workflow of linguists engaged in EU and legal translation.

In this session we will shortly introduce the quality requirements of translation projects delivered to the bodies of the European Union, and the challenges of fully complying with these standards. Next, we will demonstrate how our solution, Juremy EU terminology search offers fast and comprehensive online concordance search over the EU legal corpus and the IATE termbase.

We will show on live query examples the advantages Juremy combines through its EU-translation specific features, to name a few:

  • Reliable source documents in 24 EU languages
  • Terminology hits sorted by EuroVoc domains
  • IATE search and term extraction
  • Integrated smart search
  • Fuzzy match hits for longer phrases

In this workshop, you will gain insights into how Juremy supports the terminology research workflow of linguists, by saving time and effort which can then be spent on more in-depth research to boost quality, or on completing more projects within a given timeframe.

Provide reliable and consistent EU terminology use with Juremy’s document metadata settings

Half-Hour Workshop:

Provide reliable and consistent EU terminology use with Juremy’s document metadata settings

Juremy has already proved to be very useful for text-based search by finding the exact or fuzzy match of a given term or phrase in a single click. Juremy’s filtering options and metadata display, together with the option to search for documents by case number or number of the relevant regulation also support document research for annotation purposes.

Based on our experience, there is a need among our users for even more targeted and customized search options, including features which support legal research as well. A significant improvement towards this goal was the release of the EuroVoc Topic preference function added to Juremy a few months ago.

To further refine search options and to provide additional document information which might be relevant for a given query, a next step would be to take consolidated versions and corrigenda into account when displaying results. Undoubtedly, the existence of amended versions of a hit document can be very important when choosing a target term or referring to a document or citation.

In this session, we will first demonstrate the main EU-translation specific features of Juremy through live query examples. Then we will briefly outline the system of consolidated versions and corrigenda in the EU corpus, and why this is relevant for providing consistency and accuracy in translated texts. Finally, we will discuss the possible solutions to integrate these document metadata into Juremy’s user interface to further support high quality translations and EU terminology research workflow.
